Reporter Kathy Orton selected Symbi’s mid-century remodel in Carderock Springs as the Washington Post’s distinguished “House of the Week.” I am delighted for this opportunity to share our story of this massive transformation, a labor of love over seven years, that doubled the size of the existing home, added loads of energy-efficient upgrades, and preserved the structure for generations to come. See before and after photos below.

Our first floor recreation room was dark and dingy when we purchased the home in 2015 (left). We relocated the laundry room to the second story addition, opened the stair wall to create a “screen” for our video projector, and flanked the space with two 16-foot Pella Proline floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors.

The landscaping was completely overgrown. We replaced all of the original windows and doors and removed the ceiling in the entry way to create a welcoming and bright two-story vestibule.
